Vocal plugin chain order mattered more than which plugins I owned. These days my order is:

  1. Stabilise levels first
  2. EQ cleanup (low end, then harshness / mud)
  3. Compress with intention (staged or single-stage)
  4. De-ess before spatial effects stick
  5. Space and character last (reverb, delay, saturation)

The breakthrough wasn't another plugin. It was realising the order was doing half the work for me.

I used to collect plugins like they were going to solve everything. More tools meant better vocals, right? So I'd pile them on in whatever order made sense that day. Compression to control things, EQ to fix problems, reverb to add depth, saturation for colour. It didn't matter what order. Just keep adding until something worked.

The vocals never sounded right. Either they'd sit too far back in the mix, or they'd sound over-processed and lifeless. I kept thinking I needed better plugins or more expensive gear, but really I had no idea what I was asking each plugin to actually do.

Processing vocals in a random order was creating problems for the next plugin to solve. I wasn't mixing the vocal. I was fixing artefacts I'd just introduced.

I remember one session where I spent three hours on a vocal and watched it get worse with every change. Honestly, this happened way more than I'd like to admit. I'd compress it, then EQ it, then wonder why it sounded harsh. I'd add reverb early and then fight to make it sit right. Everything felt like I was working against the vocal instead of with it.

Those sessions taught me something important: each plugin was reacting to whatever mess I'd created in the previous step. My compressor was grabbing onto low-end rumble and harsh frequencies I should've cleaned up first. My EQ was just shaping the artefacts from bad compression. I was fighting problems I'd created five steps earlier.

I stabilise vocal levels before EQ. If the dynamics are all over the place, I can't trust what I'm hearing when I carve frequencies.

I used to dive straight into EQ, trying to clean up the vocal before anything else touched it. But the volume spikes made it hard to even hear what frequencies needed work. The loud parts masked problems, and the quiet parts got lost.

What actually made more sense was dealing with those larger inconsistencies first. Now I put anchor first in my vocal clean-up bus. It brings up the quiet parts and catches the spikes in real time, so by the time EQ sees the signal, it's consistent enough that I can actually hear what needs fixing.

After levels are stable, I EQ for two jobs: clear low-end junk the compressor shouldn't see, and smooth harsh or muddy spots before space goes on.

With the volume already stable, that cleanup became way more straightforward. I could hear what needed work instead of chasing moving targets, and clearing the low end first meant my compressor wasn't wasting energy later on frequencies that don't matter.

Here's something I stumbled on that actually helped me learn which frequencies to cut: I used to skip the cleanup EQ and add reverb later in the chain. Every time I did, certain problem frequencies would suddenly become way more obvious, like the reverb was magnifying every harsh resonance and muddy spot I'd ignored. It sounded messy and unfocused, and I'd spend forever trying to fix it with more processing. But that was actually an aha moment for me.

Now I use it as a technique whenever I'm not sure what to EQ. I'll temporarily throw reverb on the vocal and listen for what jumps out or sounds cloudy. Those are usually the exact frequencies that need smoothing, usually hiding somewhere between 3-6 kHz for harshness, or piling up in the low-mids for mud. I make the cuts, then pull the reverb back off. Suddenly everything sits cleaner.

when compression finally started working for me

With levels stabilised and problem frequencies cleaned up, compression got easier: either staged settings that follow the song's emotional shifts, or one gentle single-stage compressor when the performance is already consistent.

I used to throw compressors at inconsistent vocals and wonder why they either crushed everything or barely did anything. Once those upstream jobs were handled, compression became almost effortless. de-essing, then space and character

After compression, I de-ess around 4-8 kHz before reverb or delay go on for good. Sibilance rides spatial effects hard if you leave it late. Space and saturation only go on once the vocal is already controlled.

Compression does most of the heavy lifting after cleanup, but those sharp "s" and "t" sounds can still slip through and pierce the mix. Sibilance isn't always obvious until you add reverb either - the tail amplifies every consonant I skipped. I learned that after finishing mixes only to realise the reverb was making every sibilant jump out. A little reduction in that 4-8 kHz range is usually enough. Not removing character, just smoothing the spikes that pull focus from the performance.

Once everything's controlled, reverb and delay finally work the way they're supposed to. I think of them as depth tools, not effects. A short decay for subtle space, maybe a timed delay for width, and I always high-pass the send so it doesn't muddy the low end. Just enough dimension without pushing the vocal back.

That's also where saturation finally made sense. I used to throw it on randomly hoping for "warmth," and it never quite worked. At the end of a clean, controlled chain, that analog-style colour actually enhanced what was already working. I'll either duplicate the track and blend in a saturated copy, or use a send with EQ so I'm mainly colouring the mids, where the warmth actually lives.

The point isn't that these are magic fixes. It's that they work when everything before them has done its job.

That same order is still what I reach for: stabilise → EQ → compress → de-ess → space and character. Not a secret formula. Just being deliberate about what each stage is supposed to accomplish so they support each other instead of creating problems.

The biggest shift? I'm not stuck troubleshooting why something sounds wrong or spending hours tweaking the same settings. The vocal sits because the sequence is doing its job, and I can keep creative momentum instead of disappearing into technical rabbit holes.
