why my vocals sat on top of the mix instead of in it

mid-side dynamic eq first, then one vocal driving the rest

I get vocals to sit by making room in the track first, then keeping the other vocals moving with the lead. What I do now:

  1. Mid-side dynamic EQ on whatever's covering the vocal, sidechained from the lead. I dip the mid channel so the sides keep that frequency.
  2. Keep the doubles and harmonies with that lead so they move together instead of sitting at their own levels

The vocal could be loud enough. The chain could be fine. It still sat on top of the song instead of in it.

You know that feeling? I'd cut whatever was covering the words, boost the vocal, cut again. Clearer for a second. Then the verse felt empty, the chorus still felt stuck on top, and I'd spent the session carving a hole in the track.

What actually helped was making room only while the vocal was in, and only in the mid channel of a mid-side EQ, so the sides kept that frequency. The other half was keeping the doubles and harmonies moving with the lead.

why a static eq cut didn't make the vocal sit

A static EQ cut on the instruments made space in one band, all the time. Verses got thin. Choruses still didn't let the words through.

I used to think I could make a vocal sit by cutting a hole in the instruments and leaving it there. Whatever was crowding the lyric got a dip. Bypass the EQ and the track had life. Leave it in and the vocal was louder against a smaller song.

That cut was a decision I made at one loudness, on one section. Verse density wasn't chorus density. A cut that helped the hook made the verse feel hollow. I'd automate the EQ in, automate it out, and I'd spent the session drawing a hole instead of hearing the lead.

Scooping the instruments in the same range as the vocal didn't make anything sit. It just took the body out of the part the lyric needed to sit against.

why i started using dynamic eq

I use dynamic EQ on the parts that fight the vocal. When the vocal is in, that band gets out of the way. When it isn't, the instruments come back.

That was the move I should have reached for instead of a shelf I left on for the whole song. I put a dynamic EQ on whatever was covering the words and sidechained it from the lead, so it only moved when the vocal was actually singing. Enough that I could hear the lyric. Not enough that the instrument disappeared.

The first time that worked, I didn't lose the track in the verse. It came back the second the vocal dropped out. A static cut stays there whether the vocal is in or not. Dynamic EQ only moves while it needs to.

I still stabilise the vocal first. If the level is all over the place, I can't trust what I'm hearing, and the EQ starts following jumps that aren't the real performance. Same reason I check the balance at conversation volume before I trust it.

If something is in the way with or without the vocal, that's a small tone cut. Dynamic EQ is for the stuff that only fights while the vocal is in.

why i only move the mid channel

Even a dynamic dip can still make the song feel smaller if it takes that frequency out everywhere. I switch the EQ to mid-side and only move the mid channel. The sides keep it, so the vocal gets space without me taking that frequency out of the whole song.

Stereo dynamic EQ was still taking that band out of the whole instrument. Centre, sides, all of it. The lyric came through, but the record lost the thing that made that range feel full. The vocal was clearer and still sitting on top, because I'd taken the frequency out of the song, not just out of the way.

Mid-side is what changed how it felt. Same dynamic EQ, still sidechained from the lead, still only while the vocal is in - but I set it to the mid channel, not stereo. The mid channel is the centre of the image, not the midrange. The sides keep that frequency. It doesn't disappear. It stays out wide while the centre gets out of the way. That's the first time the vocal felt like it was sitting in the mix instead of on top of it: room in the centre, and the song still sounding like itself out wide.

why the doubles and harmonies kept covering the lead

The track was making room for the lead. Doubles and harmonies with their own levels didn't move with it. When the lead pulled back, a double jumped into that space. When it leaned in, they didn't come with it.

I grouped the backing vocals on a bus so I could treat them as one. Grouping didn't shape how they moved. A double would still pop on a word the lead had already left. I drew those balances by hand for a while, syllable by syllable. It held until the next take. Then I was drawing it again - the same reason I stopped riding every double by hand once the lead could keep the others with it.

When I started using tether, I could set the lead as the driver and leave it. The bus is still how I group the backing vocals. Tether shapes their dynamics so they follow the lead through the phrase. Mid-side dynamic EQ is still what carves the frequency space on the track when the vocal is in. Tether is working on the vocals' dynamics overall - how loud the doubles and harmonies get relative to the lead. I still decide how quiet they are. I just don't ride that relationship by hand.

Whatever's covering the vocal gets out of the way when the vocal is in, and only in the mid channel, so the sides still have that frequency. The doubles and harmonies stay with the lead. I still stabilise the vocal first so I can trust what I'm hearing.

questions i still get about vocals sitting in a mix

Should I duck the beat or raise the vocal? I set the lead where it should live, at a volume where I can talk over the music. If the track still swallows words, I make room in the covering parts. I don't turn the whole beat down. A quieter instrumental with a vocal that still sat on top didn't fix it. It just made everything quieter.

Should I sidechain the whole mix to the vocal? No. I'm not pumping the bus. I'm dipping a band on whatever's covering the lead, only while the lead is in. If a moment still needs a ride, I'll ride that moment.

Why not just cut 2-5 kHz on the instruments? That's a common place people look when a vocal isn't reading. A static scoop there made the track thin in the verse and still didn't help the hook. I only move the band that's actually covering the words, and only while the lead is in, so the instruments come back when it isn't.

Do I dip mid frequencies, or the mid in mid-side? The band is whatever's covering the vocal. The mid is the mid channel in a mid-side EQ: the centre of the stereo image, not the midrange. I dip that band on the mid channel so the sides keep it. Stereo took the frequency out of the whole song. Mid-side left it in the sides, around the lead.

Why do backing vocals undo the lead after it finally sits? They had their own dynamics, so they filled the space the track had just made. I group doubles and harmonies on a bus, then shape their dynamics so they follow the lead through the phrase.

I used to think a vocal that didn't sit needed more processing on the vocal. Most of the time the mid channel needed to get out of the way when the lead was in, the sides needed to keep that frequency, and the doubles and harmonies needed to follow the lead.
